CBR VIDEO OF THE DAY
15 Bumi IsAn Optimist, Through And Through
Mostof the coolestparts aboutBumi's character are centered on his strong personality and worldview. Overall,he'squite the optimist. He's not naive or foolish, but then again, he's quick to smile when others feel dejected.
Bumi sees the best in everything, and he believes in the good of his family and friends. Sometimes, Bumi does get upset or bitter toward others, but sooner or later, he'll bounce back and charge right into a new project or mission. He's got a "can-do" attitude.
14 His Resourcefulness Often Saves The Day
Bumi is a nonbender, so he's willing to use just about any weapon, tool, or item to get the job done. Sometimes, however, his stories of adventure are simply too ridiculous to believe outright. In fact, he once used a flute to pacify some nearby spirits, which started to turn the tide of battle when all other means failed. Bumi is also willing to commandeer any vehicle, big or small, to get the job done. If something isn't bolted down, he can use it.
13 Bumi IsA Typical Uncle
The "funny uncle" is a common archetype across all kinds of fiction.Thesecharacters are often childless, and instead dote on their brother or sister's own children and brighten everyone's day.
RELATED:Avatar: Uncle Iroh's Most Inspiring Quotes
Funny uncles like these can steal any scene and like to goof off with their nieces and nephews, and Bumi never fails to be the same. Ikki loves her aunt Kya because she's kind, but she loves her uncle Bumi because he's so much fun.
12 HeWasn't Very Close With His Father
Although Aang loved all of his children equally, he naturally spent more time with his youngest, as they both shared Airbending abilities. The Avatar was particularly excited about restoring Air Nomad culture, so he inadvertently ignored Bumi in the process of training Tenzin. Bumiteases his brother about using "classic Airbender techniques" like "cutting and running when things get tough," comparing Tenzin's absent parenting style with their father's.
11 Bumi Is A Lot LikeHis Namesake
This is the first Bumi, a powerful Earthbender who ruled Omashu with an eccentric but steady hand. He was once Aang's childhood friend, and so, Aang named his firstborn after this remarkable figure.
It's safe to say that both Bumis are birds of a feather: they are reckless and goofy, and they have unorthodox ways of thinking that can devise a creative solution to any problem. They both look gruff and bizarre, but are smarter than they look.
10 He Joins The United Forces After Being "Kidnapped"
Bumi's war stories are complicated and border on the unbelievable, but several instances in TLOK have proven that he may not befabricatingeverything. For instance, heasserts that the only reason he joined the United Forces was because they put "him in a potato sack and forced him into the ship."

Bumi eventually becomes a military commander, but not before encountering "blizzards, sandstorms, and three typhoons," on a single mountainous mission near Ba Sing Se.
9 Bumi IsBratty, Stubborn, And Takes Dangerous Risks
Bumi is the oldest of Aang and Katara's three children, but as Tenzin says, he often acts like the youngest instead. Bumi has a youthful heart, and he's not afraid to act on it. He's even like this during combat, where he wants to prove himself and show off.
He's also rather stubborn, especially when it comes to proving that nonbenders can do anything that benders can do. He even risked his life once to prove it, until he lost his grip, and Tenzin and Kya helped him avoid a bad fall.
8 HeObtains Airbending Due To The Harmonic Convergence
After the destruction of the Air Nomads, the only Airbenders alive in the world are Tenzin and his three children. Thankfully, the well-timed Harmonic Convergence event restores balance by creating a whole new population of Airbenders around the world, one of who happens to be Bumi. None of the family is willing to believe his claims at first, but they are forced to acknowledge his new powers when he blocks a plate tossed by Meelo.
7 Bumi'sSpirit Affinity Is Enhanced By His Airbending
Bumi may not be a spirit expert like his brother Tenzin or his niece Jinora, but he does have more talent with them than the average person. Even as a nonbender, he showed a mild affinity for these beings, such as when he tried to placate evil spirits with his flute.
RELATED:
It didn't work, but he got closer than most people would. He also made friends with this spirit, which he named Bum Ju, and it's been his faithful and adorable companion ever since. Now that he's an Airbender, it makes even more sense that he likes spirits.
6 His Weight Changes Between Seasons Two And Four
When he made a cameo in season 1,Bumiwas trim. By the events of season 2, he was distinctly bigger. Bumi isn't active in service, so he gained some weight. After a point, he lost it again, mostly because of his Airbending training. By season 4, Bumi the Airbender is slim and fit once again, perfect for flying around as a member of the Air Nation.
5 Bumi, The Son Of The Avatar,Lacks Bending
Kya takes after her mother, and Tenzin, from his father. It's genuinely strange that Bumi didn't inherit Airbending. Airbenders were highly spiritual, and all of them were benders to some degree or other. The Air Nation was all-bender, so the Fire Nation needed the power of Sozin's Comet to wipe them out. It's baffling that Bumi is a non-bender.
4 He's Got Luck On His Side, Though
Bumi has gotten himself out of many dire situations. To his credit, his United Forces training and ingenuity see him through the worst of it. But he's also got quite a lucky streak going, not counting his lack of Airbending as a youth.
RELATED:
His tall tales likely have some grains of truth in them, and based on what he says, he's survived all kinds of peril by the skin of his teeth. He also piloted an out-of-control mecha that would up destroying Unalaq's base camp through sheer dumb luck. He was also fortunate enough to gain Airbending when the spirits returned.
3 Bumi's Relationship With Kya
Bumi and Kya are naturally closer to each other than either of them is to Tenzin, partly because they're the older siblings (but mostly because of Aang's preferential parenting). Their relationship is quite adorable, especially considering that Kyapresumably comes out to Bumi before she tells anyone else about her sexual orientation. For the most part, though, Bumi and Kya attempt to mend their relationship with Tenzin, an offer that is continuously rebuffed in the beginning.
2 He Has Insecurities Like Everyone Else
Since Bumi is the non-bending son of the famed Avatar, it is no surprise that he's looking for ways to compensate. He joined the United Forces to change the world, he tries to show off, and he's got a stubborn streak. All this is to hide his private insecurities and shame about being a nonbender, even if that's not his fault. He seems to feel really bad that he couldn't carry on Avatar Aang's legacy and help rebuild the Air Nation as a youth. It's like he let his father down. Fortunately for him, he later gained Airbending, so he's right on track now.
1 Bumi NearlyLoses Himself (And His Siblings)In The Fog Of Lost Souls
Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin find themselves trapped in the Fog of Lost Souls when they go looking for Jinora in the Spirit World. Despite their best abilities to remain together with the help of asash, the siblings are separated when Bumi starts ranting about invisible cannibals and decides to run off. Fortunately, Tenzin recovers his spiritual center upon meeting his "father," consequently helping Bumi escape the Fog.
